The HSHPS/CDC
Student Internship Program is a part of
a cooperative agreement between Hispanic-Serving
Health Professions Schools (HSHPS) and
the Centers for Disease Control and
Prevention (CDC). The program began in
2002 and is designed “…to foster the
development of public health and
research skills of Hispanic medical and
public health students in order to
increase the number of students who
pursue careers in epidemiology,
preventive medicine, and public health
research.” The internship is an
intensive 8-week experience with CDC
staff at the central offices of the CDC
in Atlanta, GA. The program provides
students with research/clinical
experiences that will enhance their
knowledge of current techniques in
surveillance and interventions directed
at improving the health of Hispanic
populations. Selected students will be
featured in a HSHPS Press Release
distributed to over 200 national and
local newspapers.
