The Health Careers Opportunities Program (HCOP)
is federally-funded and sponsored by the
Department of Health and Human Services. HCOP
provides academic and non-academic services for
disadvantaged students who want to pursue a
career in medicine, veterinary medicine,
osteopathic medicine, public health, pharmacy,
dentistry, nursing or other allied health
sciences. HCOP helps racial and ethnic
minorities who are under-represented within
health professions to develop the skills needed
to enter and graduate from health professions
training.
The purpose of HCOP is to increase the number of
minority/disadvantaged students who will be
competitive candidates for entry into health
professions schools, and increase the number who
enter; ultimately creating a more diverse health
care workforce that is prepared and motivated to
address the expanding needs of underserved
populations, and to provide access to health
care. These programs aid students in overcoming
academic, economic and cultural barriers through
education while providing career exploration
opportunities, and offering educational
enrichment/skill-building activities. Health
Career Opportunity Programs also assist students
with college and financial aid applications, and
facilitate entry into health professions
schools.
The Health Career Opportunity Program provides
the following services to eligible participants:
- A
six-week summer program
- Monthly program meetings
- Workshops
- Parental involvement activities
- Field trips
- Mentoring opportunities
Health Care Opportunity Programs are offered
through the following Colleges and Universities
across the United States:
