HSHPS
conducted various advocacy efforts for
those issues that are of great
importance to its members. HSHPS
advocacy initiatives include
communicating to legislators and
appropriators the importance of
supporting medicine and public health
programs, and partnering with various
organizations to increase the reach of
advocacy efforts. HSHPS also signed on
to various letters submitted to the
President an Members of Congress. “Dear
Colleague” letters with strong
bipartisan support have a substantial
impact on the funding decisions made by
the House and Senate appropriators.
On February 1st, HSHPS was one of the
425 groups that signed on to a letter
sent to the President and members of
Congress for the Function 550 Budget.
The letter urges to increase
discretionary funding for public health
through the Function 550 budget
allocation in Fiscal Year 2006 by $3.5
billion. This investment is critical to
improving the health, safety and
security of our nation.
HSHPS signed onto the FY 2005
recommendation brochure which describes
the Title VII and VIII health
professions and nursing programs and
their essential role in bringing health
care to the nation's underserved
communities. It also illustrates how
these programs are meeting the goals of
enhancing the supply, diversity and
distribution of the health professions
workforce. HSHPS supports the
recommendation of at least $550 million
for the health professions and nursing
education programs in FY 2005.
HSHPS was part of the AAMC Title VII
Reauthorization Committee which
conducted a hearing on Title VII funding
on Jan 11 and 12, 2005 where Maria
Soto-Greene and Jose Manuel de la Rosa
served on the Panel.
HSHPS continued to participate with the
AAMC Health Professions and Nursing
Education (HPNEC), and the Health
Professionals for Diversity (HPD)
Coalitions which are both informal
alliances of over 80 organizations
representing a variety of schools,
programs, and individuals dedicated to
educating professional health personnel,
specifically to target the HHS Health
Resources and Services Administration
Title VII. HSHPS works with these
coalitions to address health
disparities, access to care, cultural
competence, and diversity in medical
education. Most importantly it uses
evidence based data that exists to
support the need for diversity in the
health professions and what further
research is needed strengthen the case
for diversity.
