As President of the Hispanic-Serving Health Professions Schools (HSHPS), it is my distinct pleasure to welcome you to our new website. In redesigning this site, we have created more than just an organizational information webpage; we have created an online community center for medical and public health schools that serve the Hispanic community, medical and public health students, faculty and researchers, public health officials, and individuals that are interested in learning about educational and research issues concerning the Hispanic community in the United States today.

2005 marks a milestone for the Hispanic community, as we are officially recognized as the largest ethnic minority in the United States. We have an important opportunity to inform the community on the health disparities facing us through education, research, advocacy and awareness. To that extent we are working with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the United States Department of Health and Human Services Administration, Office of Minority Health and Health Disparities to create and administer programs in those areas. In addition, through partnerships with member institutions, federal agencies, foundations, Hispanic Centers of Excellence, and other non-profit organizations, HSHPS is committed to providing a platform for improving the health of Hispanics, and to assist its member schools in the development and coordination of research initiatives.
As we move forward, HSHPS will be concentrating its efforts on faculty development by creating educational opportunities to foster the recruitment, retention and development of Hispanic faculty and researchers. This is in keeping with our ultimate goal of advancing the care of the Hispanic community.
On behalf of the Board of Directors, I would like to thank our Member Schools for their continued support and dedication to HSHPS’ mission, and those that we represent. Together, we will forge ahead embracing a better future.
If you have any questions or comments please feel free to contact us. Thank you for your interest in the Hispanic-Serving Health Professions Schools.
Sincerely,

Maria Soto-Greene, M.D.
President of HSHPS
